What causes brown spots?
Most brown spots on the skin are caused by sunlight or aging changes. Those that are flat are often easily removed with either our YAG or Ruby laser in one or two easy treatments.
How does the laser work?
The YAG and Ruby lasers work by instantaneously heating the pigmented cells and damaging them beyond the body's ability to repair. Amazingly, at the same time, these lasers are very safe for the skin surrounding the brown spot. Other treatments like freezing with liquid nitrogen are hard on both the brown spot and the surrounding skin, so there is a higher risk of a white spot or scar.
Is the process painful?
There is a very brief snap of discomfort as the pigmented cells are instantaneously and selectively targeted. Over the course of the next week or two the dead cells dry up and peel off. The discomfort can be almost eliminated by using a topical numbing cream and/or use of our Zimmer cooling spray.
How will I look after treatment?
Immediately after treatment, each spot will turn white for about 1/2 hour and then welt up like a red raspberry. Within 24 hours a thin scab or crust will form over each treated spot that typically lasts 5-10 days. During this time you will need to care for the spots delicately with gentle cleansing and a healing ointment such as aquaphor and using a broad spectrum sun block.
Are there any side effects?
Side effects with laser treatment are less frequent than with other methods of removal. Common effects are initial redness and crusting, followed by pinkness for a few weeks. This is especially common on the legs. Occasionally, the skin may be temporarily lighter or darker, for a few weeks or months. Darker spots after treatment are most common in individuals with darker skin tones. There is a rare chance of the skin staying lighter in the treated spot and a slight chance of a scar. Keeping the treated area well moisturized and protected from sun exposure will speed the healing and improve the final result.
Can the pigment come back?
Most sun damage spots will stay clear once they are gone. Some birthmarks and moles may be more difficult to clear permanently, even after multiple treatments. If this is the case, other lasers or surgery can be considered.

Follow 120th Ave up the hill (past Trader Joe's). Go through light at 128th and then turn into the 2nd driveway on the left. We are in the Evergreen Professional Plaza between 128th and 130th lane. We are in Bldg G towards the rear of the parking lot, Suites 100 and 104.
Be sure to allow sufficient travel time as this is a high traffic area and there is often construction going on nearby at Evergreen Hospital.
