How does DYSPORT™ work?
DYSPORT™ works by allowing muscles in a treated area to relax. Because wrinkles are caused by habits of expression and sometimes due to poor eyesight or headaches, once the muscles are allowed to rest, frown lines, forehead lines or crow's feet may flatten out considerably.

What is DYSPORT™?
DYSPORT™ is similar to BOTOX®, with a protein extracted from the bacterium clostridium botulinum. Although it has been used in other countries for several years, it received FDA approval in the U.S. for aesthetic purposes in April, 2009. Like Botox, DYSPORT™ is a purified form of botulism toxin that primarily works to lessen frown lines between the eyes but may also be used for crow's feet or other facial areas.

How is the Procedure Performed?
Your health care provider will inject tiny amounts of DYSPORT™ into the facial muscles that are causing your lines. The procedure takes just a few seconds.

Does it hurt?
You will feel only minor and brief discomfort during these injections and there is generally no recovery time needed. At the Laser Treatment Center we use a skin cooling system prior to administering DYSPORT™ to help minimize the slight discomfort you may feel from the injections.

When will the treatment take effect?
The effects of DYSPORT™ may be seen from 3-10 days after treatment.

How Long Will the Results Last?
The results of DYSPORT™ injections are not permanent. A treatment usually lasts from two to six months, with three to four being the average, so, three or four treatments per year will maintain the improved appearance. When it starts to wear off, you will notice a gradual return of your wrinkles. If you choose not to continue with DYSPORT™ the appearance of lines or wrinkes will not be any worse than if you hadn't had it.

Who is a Candidate for This Procedure?
DYSPORT™ works best in patients who are less than 65 years old. Frown lines between the eyebrows, forehead lines, and crow's feet can be treated successfully. After age 65, DYSPORT™ in combination with a "filler" such as Restylane can help achieve the desired results.

What About Wrinkes In The Mid And Lower Face?
DYSPORT™ is occasionally used in these areas. We want to be careful not to distort your smile and facial expressions, (but if this did occur, it would be temporary). Treatments with lasers or injections of "fillers" such as Restylane may be more appropriate for these areas. Discuss these options with your physician or physician assistant.

Combining DYSPORT™ With Fillers
Since DYSPORT™ is not a filler like Restylane, Juvederm, Radiesse, Artefill or Evolence, it cannot treat folds or lines that are not caused by muscle action. You may achieve wonderful results by combining DYSPORT™ with one of the fillers mentioned above in the same treatment session. Going South on I-405:

Take Exit 20 (NE 124th St.). At the exit stop light turn left onto NE 124th St. At Totem Lake Blvd. turn left. Follow to next light (120th Ave NE) and turn right. You are now on 120th Ave. Follow 120th up the hill (past Trader Joe's). Go through light at 128th and then turn into the 2nd driveway on the left. We are in the Evergreen Professional Plaza between 128th and 130th lane. We are in Bldg G towards the rear of the parking lot, Suites 100 and 104.

Going North on I-405:

Take exit 20B (NE 124th St/Totem Lake Blvd). Stay in the right lane towards Totem Lake Blvd. and go under the freeway, proceed through the stoplight onto 120th Ave NE. Be sure to allow sufficient travel time as this is a high traffic area and there is often construction going on nearby at Evergreen Hospital.

Good News for Mice!

Wow, a fresh study performed at three different research centers has found that an immunosuppressive antibiotic drug already FDA approved for use in humans has extended the lifespan of mice around 10%.

The most significant aspect of this is that it did so when given to them at the equivalent age in human years of about 60 years old. Of course, it needs to be investigated further to find out why this would happen before it can be used for this purpose in people, and there may well be consequences to having your immune system suppressed for years, but it's certainly interesting. That amount of lifespan extension is more than if cancer and heart disease were both eliminated.

Another finding that resonates with those of us of a certain age is that mice designed to have Alzheimer's disease were returned to normal, memory-wise and also in terms of abnormal brain plaques, with injections of an already FDA approved growth factor substance that is used to stimulate stem cells in the blood. It seems to stimulate stem cells in the brain as well. Again, more study is needed, but nice to see progress! I'm sure the mice appreciated it too...
